About Cairn Home Safety

Independent Home Safety Advisor · Portland, Oregon
I started Cairn because I kept seeing the same thing: families who knew something needed to change at home, but had no one truly in their corner to help them figure out what, and no trustworthy way to get it done. A contractor has an incentive to sell work. A family member has an emotional stake. What most people needed was something simpler — an experienced, honest set of eyes, and someone who would see the project through.
That’s what Cairn Home Safety LLC is. And it’s what I do.
My Background
My career has taken a few turns, and I think that’s exactly what makes me good at this work.
I spent years in social work — including time working in Glasgow, Scotland — where I learned to listen carefully, meet people where they are, and hold space for difficult conversations without rushing to a solution. That foundation never left me.
I later moved into the building products industry, where I developed a working knowledge of how homes are constructed, what modifications are realistic, and what questions to ask contractors to separate the good ones from the rest. After that, a long stretch in corporate and agency recruiting sharpened my instinct for reading people quickly and building trust fast.
Put those together — social work, building products, recruiting — and you get someone who can walk through a home, spot what matters, explain it plainly, and help a family actually move forward. That’s the combination I bring to every Cairn engagement.

Why Cairn Home Safety Exists
Why Cairn?
The name carries two meanings, and both feel right.
A cairn is a stack of stones placed along a trail to help hikers find their way — especially in uncertain terrain. That’s exactly what I hope to be for the families I work with: a clear, steady marker that says “you’re going the right way.”
It’s also a nod to our cairn terrier mix, Nessie — a nod to my time in Scotland, and a reminder that the best things in life tend to be sturdy, a little scrappy, and completely loyal.
I live in Multnomah Village with my partner and Nessie. This community is where Cairn is rooted, and where I do my best work.
I offer a free 20-minute introductory call — no obligation, no sales pitch. Just a conversation about what you’re dealing with and whether Cairn is the right fit.

The Problem We Solve
Home improvement and repair is one of the most common sources of consumer complaints in the United States. Older adults are particularly vulnerable, often navigating complex decisions without a second opinion in the room.
Common issues include unclear scope of work, unexpected cost increases, incomplete work, and poor communication throughout projects. In many cases, the issue is not technical ability, but a lack of clear, shared understanding from the outset.
Cairn provides that clarity.
Independent and Unbiased
Cairn does not sell products and does not take commissions or referral fees from contractors.
Our recommendations are based solely on what is safest and most practical for each home. Where specialist work is required, we can refer to trusted professionals, but all advice remains independent.
This structure ensures that our interests and our clients’ interests are always aligned.
Who Cairn Is For
• Older adults who want to remain in their homes safely and confidently
• Family members seeking a trusted, accountable advisor
• Individuals who want clear, independent guidance before undertaking home modifications
Why “Cairn”
A cairn is a stack of stones used as a trail marker. It shows a safe path forward, particularly when the route is not obvious.
That is exactly what Cairn Home Safety is designed to provide, clear direction and confidence about the next steps.
